Minutes June 8, 2004

Meeting minutes for June 8 8:05pm to 9:50
[Note: This was my first trial as note-taker; this persuades me that the first draft should be completed on the spot; i.e., that Jim had the right method]

1 Scheduling - Decision: Keep to current schedule drafted at
previous business meeting, that is:

Sat July 17-at Max's house
Hot Spring Shabbaton-rescheduled for August 6-8
Sat August 21 -- PLACE OPEN. Need a volunteer
Tues evening September 7 Business meeting
Sat night, Sept 11, possible Selichot service
Sat eve, Sept 25, Neila svc & break-fast - at Carol & Steve's
Sat Oct 2 (during Sukkot)-Claire & Ed Sat
Oct 30 -- Paul and Miryam Sas (movable to Aug 21, if needed)

At our next meeting on 9/7, there will still be time to discuss whether to consider a general change from our 3rd shabbt of the month in order to coordinate with a possible change of schedule for children's services at Netivot. Before that meeting, Ethel will talk with parents who might want to give input.

2 Women's Torah Project -- we'll post a link to the document that explains the project, with reference to Seattle Kadima Congregation

3- Finances. $450 in the account; about $180 is bespoke for childcare, mailing, and internet costs. This pointed toward reflecting on our fundraising cycle. Since the fundraising letter is sent with the calendar, we aim to have the revision of last year's letter in hand by Sept 7th meeting. To be sent out in the fall, rather than during the summer.

4- Siddur changes - People felt it was fluid and easy to use. In July, Max will post PDFs of the siddur to our website.

5- Inreach and outreach: Learning to trope is surely part of our community, and this lead to reviewing what tapes/educational material might be shared. Tapes specifically made by Sophie, one of the early members-- Max will ask Judith Linzer has 2 boxes of archival Nishmat material. Ethel has agreed to called her Alex has a tape of Carol's class on Torah Service -- Emily will ask Alex about this Paul offered to digitize tapes, so that they can be shared on CD or as mp3s

Outreach, when people call Ethel. Discussed various things that might be put into a handy list, for Ethel to review with people who make inquiries. On the list might be: a) A request for an email and physical address. b) Info about where the next service will be. c) A question about whether the person would like to be called or emailed with a reminder on the Thurs before the next service. d) A question as to whether they would feel more comfortable if we could arrange someone to pick them up to travel to the next service. [If they would like a ride, Emily volunteered to be asked, although this is not a commitment to be available, just an offer to be considered.] Max will supply Ethel with our internal roster of contact information.

Discussing the development of "a vision statement" led to a refinement of what is desired-- Develop enough information to put out a 3-fold brochure about Nishmat, that can be used to communicate what our minyan is about. Carol and Paul are both interested in working on the text for this project later this summer.

6- Web site topics. Member info. (Max will supply everyone's number to Ethel.) The site architecture may require extension, to host the Women's Torah Project document and to provide access to meeting minutes

7- Hot springs trip -- Aug 6-8. Marcia's the main organizer, and her contact info is: Marcia Brooks (510) 527 - 5452

8- Neilah service and break-fast. (9/25) decided to consider sponsorship, and make a commitment to provide childcare. Since Yom Kippur will end on a Saturday night, it will be a big havdallah service. Carol's interested in hosting. We need a volunteer who could be at carol's house during the day on Friday, to be there for people who drop off food.

9- Selichot (9/11) -- We have a Siddur. We can consider holding this service again if we find a leader by early July. Typically, we start at 11 pm and go through midnight, at the start of the morning. (Need a leader)

10- Change in roles. Carol will take on davening coordinator (for a while) on an interim basis, and will disburden the job of sending email announcements reminders to Paul (in training). Still need a house-finder.
